Royal Women of the House of Windsor Dress Up for Prince Harry’s Wedding

How do women in a 1,000-year-old monarchy dress up?

If the way of dressing of Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge apply to all women in the royal family, it seems that a member of their staff contacts designers. Then, the particular royal chooses from a slew of clothes (with a staff perhaps by her side to remind her of the monarchy’s dizzying protocols in dressing up). The lucky designer whose clothes gets chosen gets informed for the fittings. The other clothes are graciously sent back and payment gets sent to the lucky one.

Yes, royals pay for their clothes.

When many monarchies around the world aren’t existing anymore because people don’t want them in their countries, it goes to say that the British Monarchy is doing something right. From the way the Queen helps the Parliament in the affairs of the country, to how and who gets chosen to enter their family, down to their way of dressing, everyone can learn something.

So how does its members dress up for the 6th in line to their throne’s wedding?

Queen Elizabeth II

No muted colors for the Queen as usual. She knows she needs to stand out so people, who are up to 15 feet deep in the crowd, can see her.

This gesture oftentimes gets copied by the Duchess of Cambridge although she sometimes tones it down to bring attention to other royals. In Prince Harry’s wedding, her light yellow outfit is very low-key but cheerful enough so Meghan’s dress is the one that people will remember. That’s protocol and class at work.

Spot the Queen’s colorful outfits in the following memorable royal weddings.

Her Majesty’s resident dresser, Angela Kelly’s touch is in her hat. It used the same lime silk tweed. However, the sinamay across the crown with handmade lace crystals and pearls is by Lucy Price.

The Queen’s outfit is never complete without a brooch. For the wedding, she wore The Richmond Diamond Brooch with a pearl drop.

The Duchess of Cornwall

The Duchess came in an ice pink silk marocain asymmetrical coat dress by Anna Valentine. She had also created her wedding dress to Prince Charles plus the dress she wore to Prince William’s wedding.

Royal watchers know that the Duchess can spot and wear with aplomb a great hat. On Prince Harry’s wedding, she had an ice pink feathered hat by Philip Treacy. However, her most iconic topper is from her own wedding at Windsor Castle in 2005. During this civil marriage to Prince Charles, she had a wide-brimmed ivory hat with a cluster of decorative elements on one side.

No one picks a hat like the Duchess of Cornwall.

The Duchess of Cambridge

Her favorite designer, Alexander McQueen, dressed the Duchess in a primrose yellow wool silk tailored coat in her first official function after giving birth to Prince Louis. If the outfit looks familiar, it’s because it’s the same coat she wore to Princess Charlotte’s christening and to two other official royal functions.

Her hat is by Philip Treacy and her shoes are by Jimmy Choo.

The Countess of Wessex

The glamorous 53-year-old Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex wore an outfit by Suzannah. It’s a dove grey duchess satin maxi skirt and an embroidered crop grey top.

Her fascinator, with an elegant ostrich feather coiled around the brim, is by Jane Taylor.

The order of precedence in the royal family is always at work. That’s why the Queen walks out first before everyone else. This is obvious in their seating arrangement at the wedding. The closer one is to the throne, the closer one gets positioned next to the Queen.

The Countess of Wessex sat behind the Duchess of Cambridge. It’s because her husband, Prince Andrew, is the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth and is only 10th in line to the throne. The Duchess’ husband, Prince William, is second in line, being the first-born son of Queen Elizabeth’s eldest.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie of York

I love keeping these two sisters together. Who could forget their hats during Prince William’s wedding?

But wiser as they are now, after seven years from wearing those outlandish hats, Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice of York, 29, has a bespoke midi dress by Roksanda Viola in a hand dyed teal silk organza with billowing sleeves and a ton of little beads.

This time she has a gorgeous multi-strand Stephen Jones headband.

Her 28-year-old sister, Princess Eugenie, chose a demure 60s style dress by Gainsbourg. It’s coordinated with a simple white pillbox hat by Fiona Graham. Her fabulous shoes are by no other than Valentino. Ravishing as she usually is, she’ll be the next royal to marry on Oct. 12.
